In modern times, the Via Cassia has been superceded by the Florence-Sienna motorway but in fact a drive along the Via Cassia is second in interest only to the <a title=\"Via Chiantigiana\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti-italy.com\/chiantigiana.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Via Chiantigiana<\/strong><\/span><\/a> which runs right down the middle of Chianti.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1910\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1910\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/san-donato-in-poggio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/san-donato-in-poggio-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"San Donato in Poggio in Chianti\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/san-donato-in-poggio-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/san-donato-in-poggio-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/san-donato-in-poggio.jpg 761w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #cc3300;\"><strong>The main street of San Donato in Poggio, Chianti<\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In any case, those making a motor excursion through this part of Chianti should be sure to stop for an hour or so in San Donato. Quite a stretch of the 12 C defensive wall remains intact along with two mediaeval gateways, the <strong>Porta Fiorentina<\/strong> and <strong>Porta Senese<\/strong>. There&#8217;s also a fine watch tower, <strong>Il Torrino<\/strong>, springing up from the wall.<\/p>\n<p>The main street, <strong>Via del Giglio<\/strong>, runs from Porta Fiorentina to the main piazza, location of <strong>Palazzo Malaspina<\/strong> and the church of <strong>Santa Maria della Neve<\/strong>, that rare structure in Tuscany, a Gothic church, dating from the 15 C. In the middle of the piazza, there is octagonal well that was the main source of water for San Donato through most of its history. The <strong>Palazzo Pretorio<\/strong>, largely reconstructed following World War II bomb damage, faces Palazzo Malaspina.<\/p>\n<p>The most important church in San Donato is the <strong>Pieve di San Donato<\/strong> located near the Porta Senese. This parish church is Romanesque in style, like almost all Chianti parish churches (pievi), and is documented as early as the year 989. It houses a Della Robbia baptismal font dating from 1513.<\/p>\n<p>There are two restaurants and a number of food supply shops in San Donato.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #cc3300;\">Worth a stop.
