This area is characterised, obviously, by numerous picturesque castles, both intact and ruined, together with several beautiful <a title=\"Chianti parish churches\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/romanesquechurches.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong><em>pievi<\/em> (parish churches)<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and fortified abbeys. The surrounding hills are dotted with wineries and agriturismi making Gaiole a popular centre for holidaymakers. There are a number of established <a title=\"Chianti castles routes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/castelli-del-chianti\/castles-of-chianti_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>&#8220;castles routes&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/a> radiating out from Gaiole so that it&#8217;s a simple matter for visitors to the area to put together a half or full day car excursion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2038\" style=\"width: 439px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti-439x300.jpg\" alt=\"Gaiole in Chianti - Castello di Barbischio\" width=\"439\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti-439x300.jpg 439w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti-150x102.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti-775x528.jpg 775w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/gaiole-in-chianti.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #cc3300;\"><strong>Castello di Barbischio above Gaiole in Chianti<\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a title=\"Gaiole in Chianti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti-chianti.net\/#Gaiole in Chianti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Gaiole in Chianti<\/span><\/a><\/span> had its origins in mediaeval times as the market to the Castle of Vertine and the Castle of Barbischio, and was one of the foundation towns of the <a title=\"Chianti League\" href=\"https:\/\/www.radda-in-chianti.com\/history_of_radda.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Chianti League<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. It is now a farming centre, mostly for vineyards and olive growers. Gaiole in Chianti has a pleasant main street with restaurants and cafes, making it a good place to stop for lunch when exploring this part of Chianti.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many sights of interest in the vicinity of Gaiole are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a title=\"Badia a Coltibuono\" href=\"https:\/\/www.badia-a-coltibuono.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><em><strong>Badia a Coltibuono<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, formerly the principal abbey of the area but now a winery with a popular restaurant. Tours of parts of the former abbey and the reconstructed italianate garden are available.<\/li>\n<li>The walled village of <a title=\"Vertine\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/castelli-del-chianti\/vertine_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><em><strong>Vertine<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> is well worth a stop. In mediaeval times, Chianti was dotted with <a title=\"History of Chianti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/historyofchiantiitaly.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>tiny, walled borghi like Vertine<\/strong><\/span><\/a> but now there are few remaining intact. Vertine and <a title=\"Montefioralle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montefioralle.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Montefioralle<\/strong><\/span><\/a> are fine extant examples of what was once the most common form of inhabited nucleus in Chianti.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Castello di Spaltenna\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gaiole-in-chianti.com\/spaltenna.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><em><strong>Castello di Spaltenna<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> and its parish church form another classic example of a Tuscan fortified settlement consisting of a monastery (previously a castle), a parish church and a cluster of farmhouses. Spaltenna is now private property but some parts of it can be visited.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Castello di Brolio\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/broliocastle.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Castello di Brolio<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a> is a neo-gothic pile that still belongs to the family of <a title=\"Baron Ricasoli\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/broliocastle.htm#baron_ricasoli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Baron Ricasoli<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, an important participant in the formation of a united Italy and the inventor of the first Chianti Classico wine grape formula. Parts of the castle can be toured, and the gardens and ramparts can be visited without a ticket.
