Massa Marittima was founded by the Etruscans, like many cities in Tuscany, and is located in the <b> Colline Metallifere<\/b> so that its history is closely linked to the copper and silver mines nearby. During the Dark Age, Massa Maritimma grew at the expense of <b><a href=\"https:\/\/altamaremma.org\/populonia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Populonia<\/a><\/b>, another ancient city of the Etruscans, where numerous Etruscan ruins may be viewed today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2065\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/massa_marittima.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2065\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/massa_marittima-444x300.jpg\" alt=\"Massa Marittima\" width=\"444\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/massa_marittima-444x300.jpg 444w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/massa_marittima-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chianti.info\/chianti\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/massa_marittima.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>A view over Massa Marittima towards the Maremma plains<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\">Massa Marittima possesses a spectacular gothic-romanesque <strong>Duomo<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>Palazzo Pretorio<\/strong>, <strong>Palazzo Comunale<\/strong>, the <a title=\"Church of Saint Augustine\" href=\"https:\/\/www.massa-marittima.com\/massa_marittima_augustine_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Church of Sant&#8217; Agostino<\/strong><\/a> and the Fonte dell&#8217; Abbondanza. The &#8220;<b>Balestro del Girifalco<\/b>&#8221; is a cross-bow competition that has taken place here since ancient times, twice a year on the first Sunday after May 20 and the 2nd Sunday of August. Not surprisingly, Massa Marittima is considered one of the mediaeval jewels of Tuscany, and located in the hill country of the &#8220;off the beaten track&#8221; <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.altamaremma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maremma<\/a><\/b>.
